Using a DISC Test for Teams: A Practical Guide for Managers

How managers and brokers can use DISC results to improve communication, coaching and collaboration, without putting people in boxes.

Most team friction is not about skill. It is about style. One person wants decisions now; another needs time to think. One person shares every idea out loud; another prefers to send a well-researched email. A DISC test gives the whole team a shared, non-judgmental language for these differences.

What DISC is (and isn't) for

  • Use it to improve communication, coaching and self-awareness.
  • Use it to understand why people respond differently to the same message.
  • Don't use it as the only basis for hiring, firing or promotion decisions.
  • Don't use it to label people. Everyone uses all four styles; DISC shows the mix.

A simple rollout plan

  • Week 1: Everyone takes the assessment, including the manager.
  • Week 2: Each person reads their own report and highlights two insights.
  • Week 3: Run a team session where everyone shares their primary style and one thing others should know about working with them.
  • Ongoing: Reference styles in one-on-ones, especially when coaching difficult conversations or negotiations.

Coaching each style

High D team members want autonomy and results; coach them on patience and detail. High I team members want recognition and connection; coach them on follow-through. High S team members want stability; coach them on speaking up and handling change. High C team members want accuracy; coach them on speed of action and visibility.
